Site Visits

Attend a site-visit

Site visits are valuable opportunities for postdocs and graduate students to learn about the company in-person and speak directly with industry professionals. The Postdoc Industry Exploration Program helps you get through the doors to some of the most exciting and innovative companies in the San Francisco Bay Area. On site, PIEP participants get to learn about the company, become acquainted with different jobs, gain a sense of the culture, and start building valuable connections through talks, tours, panel discussions and networking opportunities.

Eligibility

Participating in our site-visits is simple:

Step 1: Connect with the PIEP community by joining our listserve and Linkedin Group.

Step 2: Apply to our site visit by submission of your resume

You will receive RSVP information about upcoming site visits through our listserve.
For each site-visit, you will receive a link to an invitation. You need to submit your current resume in order to be eligible to participate. Responding to the invitation does not guarantee your spot.

Step 3: Wait for notification

Members are selected to go on site visits based on several criteria including the resume, attendance record and company input. If you are selected, you will receive email confirmation with information about transportation arrangements and itinerary. If you are not selected, you will receive email notification about your placement on our waitlist. People on the waitlist have a chance to go on the site visit in the event of cancellations. If you are selected and need to cancel, please do so more than 48 hours in advance.

Step 4: Prepare for the site visit

Research the company by exploring its website. Become familiar with the business and look at the current job openings to get a sense of whom they are hiring and the skills they are looking for. On a few occasions, there have been recruiters on-site to tell our group about upcoming openings and take resumes. Attend the PIEP workshops to learn new skills and knowledge, which supplement our site visits.

Step 5: Enjoy the site visit

Remember to be on time for the bus because the bus leaves promptly at the departure time. The site-visit is a valuable opportunity to get a sneak peak inside companies generally closed to the public. On-site, you will learn about the company through presentations, discussions and sometimes a tour of the facility. Take advantage of the occasion by networking with industry professionals who may become valuable contacts in your current or future job search. The companies we visit often post job openings on our list-serve.

Step 6: Tell us about your experience

A short survey will be sent to you shortly after the site visit. Your responses are important to us for improving future site visits and maintaining program funding.
